Crocs is an American footwear brand established in 2002 by three friends who started selling foam clogs designed for boating. What looked like an unlikely fashion proposition — clunky, hole-pocked, distinctly unglamorous — quickly grew into a global phenomenon. Crocs are now worn by everyone from healthcare workers and chefs (who value the wipe-clean surface) to fashion influencers (who treat them as statement pieces).

The magic is Croslite, the brand's proprietary closed-cell resin. Croslite is lightweight, water-resistant, doesn't absorb odours, and moulds gently to foot shape with body heat. The trademark ventilation holes are doubled as charm slots: Jibbitz, Crocs' signature accessories, snap into the holes so wearers can personalise their clogs with thousands of designs.

Beyond the classic clog, Crocs has expanded into platform clogs, lined fleece-warmed winter clogs, slip-on sandals, flip-flops and even Crocs trainers. Collaborations with brands and designers (KFC, Justin Bieber, Salehe Bembury) have pushed Crocs into fashion territory. Through it all the comfort proposition stays the same: lightweight, supportive, easy to clean.

Crocs typically run half a size large compared to UK standards. If you're a UK 7 you'll usually want a Crocs M6 / W8 (Crocs uses US sizing). The brand's heel strap can be worn either at the back of the heel (Sport mode, more secure) or rotated over the top (Comfort mode, looser). Crocs are essentially indestructible. Hose them down with water and mild soap to clean. The Croslite material can fade slightly with prolonged sun exposure but doesn't crack or wear through under normal use. They're not designed for serious athletic activity (no arch support, the heel strap isn't a sport closure), but for everyday casual wear, gardening, dog-walking, boat trips and quick errands they're hard to beat.
